The Market Outside Your Radar · Newsletter

The audience is finally moving the discount need. It still ranks ninth of ten, in the most crowded aisle on the board.

Discount is up. Belonging still answers 13× more.

Good news first, for everyone whose Black Week plan is mostly percentage signs.

The customers are coming round. After three readings in which brands moved it, the discount need is now moving because the audience moves it. And it’s moving up.

Enjoy that sentence. The rest of this issue is going to take it away from you.

What we read

We track a global consumer reference market: the brands your customers see outside your own category. For every customer need state, the engine reads three things.

How strongly the audience answers when a brand serves that need (a response index without a unit; it ranks). How crowded the need is. And who moved it: brands entering or leaving, brands posting more, or the audience answering differently.

Here is Smart Shopping, the home of every discount post, across the last five readings:

ReadingResponse indexCrowdingWho moved itRank
27 Oct0.3455brands8th
28 Oct0.3855brands8th
30 Oct0.4256brands8th
31 Oct0.5155the audience9th
1 Nov0.5256the audience9th of 10

Three readings in which brands moved the line. Then the switch: since Saturday, the audience does.

And 0.52 is the best reading this need has had in any reading we’ve stored since 6 October. The index is up about half in five readings.

That’s the slide someone will show in this week’s marketing meeting.

“Discount is up by half, and it’s customer-driven. Double down.”

Please don’t be that someone.

Now the bad news

Look at the last column. The best discount reading in four weeks ranks ninth of ten.

Look at the crowding: 56. Reading after reading, for four weeks, Smart Shopping has been the most crowded need on the board. In the last five readings it sat at 2.6 to 3.7 times the next-most-crowded one.

Up by half from a small base, in the busiest aisle in the store, is still small.

Now look one line up the same table. Same reading, 1 November:

6.95
Belonging: response index, crowding 15, #1
0.52
Smart Shopping: response index, crowding 56, #9

That’s about 13 times the response of the discount need, at about a quarter of the crowding. And it isn’t a one-day spike: Belonging has been number one in every reading since 25 October. Seven readings in a row.

Who carries it? Not luxury houses with a brand film budget. An outdoor retailer. A fashion retailer. A home-decorating merchant. Shops that make customers feel part of something, and get answered for it.

What the switch actually tells you

The driver switch matters, but not the way the slide says.

When brands move a need, you’re watching your competitors’ publishing schedules. When the audience moves it, you’re watching customers. So yes: the audience is stirring on discount, as you’d expect four weeks before Black Friday.

But stirring on a crowded need is not the same as being answered. A crowding score of 56 doesn’t get quieter because the audience leaned in a little.

How a war-room morning would file this

If this were 08:00 on a Black Week morning, this is the call:

  • Smart Shopping: Watch. The audience is moving, so keep the discount where it already runs. Don’t chase it with extra budget. Every euro you add lands in the most crowded aisle.
  • Belonging: Push now. Number one, audience-driven, a quarter of the crowding. Give it one lever today.
  • Don’t chase: the instinct to answer a louder discount with a deeper discount.

That’s the job of a morning edition. Not “discount good” or “discount bad”. Who moved the need overnight, how crowded it is, and which of your levers goes where today.

The decision, this week

You’re not going to cancel Black Week discounts. Nobody is asking you to.

Move one lever. One CRM subject line, one homepage tile, one paid creative, built on belonging instead of the percentage.

Keep the discount version running next to it. Compare the response. If “belonging” loses, you lost one tile. If it wins, you found the line your category’s discount crowd isn’t on.

No new tool, no new process. An input into the one you already have.
